Professor Dr Christine Kranz

Christine Kranz is head of a research group at Ulm University, Germany.  Her current research focuses on applications of advanced multifunctional scanning probes in biomedical research and energy-related topics. Recently, conductive colloidal probes for electrochemical force spectroscopy has been developed e.g., for studying bactera adhesion.

In recent years, Dr Kranz research group have pioneered the integration of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) functionality into atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips with an electrode area recessed from the apex of the AFM tip. With this approach, tip-integrated micro- and nanoelectrodes may be operated in an electrochemical imaging mode while simultaneously recording high resolution topographical information via AFM.

Biography: Christine received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Technical University of Munich (Germany) and after spending a year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Analytical Chemistry (Austria), she accepted a position at the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology (USA). In 2008, she moved back to Germany and is currently apl. Professor at the University of Ulm, Institute of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (IABC). She is heading the surface sciences group and coordinates the biosensing research activities at IABC. Her main research focus is on scanning probe microscopy (AFM, SECM), multifunctional scanning probe microscopy, miniaturized amperometric biosensors, light-driven photocatalysis and energy-related research. She is on the Editorial Board of Analytical Chemistry, ChemElectroChem, Electrochemical Science Advances and Electrochimica Acta. Since 2020, she is Associate Editor of Bioelectrochemistry (Elsevier).
